If
you're feeling intimidated where to start with your new Android device, or
you're a long-time Google fan looking to complete your collection of critical
tools, this is the list for you. I've spent many hours refining that unmanageable
amount of apps to create the 100 best Android apps, but for some that are still
too many, I've narrowed the list down to the essentials.
What is here ?
What is here ?
I admit that this list does not
have everything. He does not even begin to play the seemingly endless variety
of the Google Play Store. What it covers are the apps you should install on
your Android phone or tablet as soon as it leaves the box. With these ten
applications installed, you should be able to deal with just about anything.
But these are just the beginning. Evernote is a hugely versatile tool, but you
may find that it is not meeting your to-do list needs and you want to move to a
refined organizational application such as Any.do. Or maybe after reading tons
of comics at Comixology, you're curious to read the huge accumulation of Marvel
titles available for a single monthly fee through Marvel Unlimited. This list
of applications is a starting point, or a baseline, that I think any Android
user should consider. From here, you'll want to customize and refine the list
to your most essential applications.
How do I choose Android apps?
When I'm not guessing the top 10
Android apps, I'm usually testing the Android security apps. When I am
finished, I will typically clean the phone in preparation for the next review.
That means I spend more time with fresh and empty phones than the average
Android user. It also means that I have to fill that backup phone with
applications essential for testing and everyday use. When compiling this
list-and when rebuilding my phone-my first thought goes to what applications
are needed to get the job done, so I turn to Google Drive and LastPass. The
first one allows me to access my files and get important items from my phone
with ease. The latter stores all the passwords I will need to access critical
applications and services. Next I think about what types of applications are
popular, and how I can fill those categories. Instagram, for example, is a
great application for creating miniature masterpieces of your cell phone
images. But it is something of a self-contained world. So I choose PicsArt
Photo Studio, which is more open and flexible. As smartphones have become more
powerful, so have the numerous streaming entertainment services. Although there
are many options for streaming movies and TV, including Google Play, Netflix
has the most extensive and exciting selection. The company has also increased
the streaming media offering with its well-considered original content and,
more recently, the ability to download some of its content to mobile devices to
view offline. In music streaming space Spotify offers an almost unparalleled
experience, and is a great mobile fitness app, too, intelligently integrate
features like beat-matching to keep the riders in rhythm, too. If you allow me
to put my paranoid cap for a moment (yes, it is made of foil), the safety of
the mobile device is a very ignored topic. Google has done an admirable job of
turning Android and Google Play into a secure platform, but not all threats
come from malicious applications. As the network airspace becomes increasingly
crowded with wireless networks, so does the risk of your data being intercepted
in transit. A mobile VPN, or virtual private network, such as NordVPN is no
longer a niche product, and should be the necessary installation for all but
frequent travelers.
What is not here?
First of all, there are no games.
I hear you moan, but Android games deserve their own story. There is simply too
much of a variety too large. If you want games (and I know you do), you should
read our guide a little longer to the best games for Android. That will take
care of all your thumb needs, change the screen. Secondly, there are only a few
Google applications here. It's really easy to use by default for them, since many
are as well, by default on Android devices. As for the Google applications that
made the list, I have carefully balanced its utility against that of
competitors in space to make sure that they really are the best. For example,
Google Drive also gives you access to Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides, which is
an excellent mobile office suite. This is just the tip of the Android iceberg
here in PCMag. You will find many, many more excellent applications in our 100
best Android applications, and we have many more detours from where it arose.
We're all about apps, you see. This list will help you get started, but the
bright world of Android applications is waiting for you! Do you have different
suggestions on the 10 most important applications of Android to entertain,
inform and improve productivity? Let me know in the comments.
Comixology Comics
Coming to the few comic
bookstores remaining in the United States is a huge hassle as well as storing
all your bagged and embarked treasures. Comics, the excellent application of
digital comicógrafos Complexion, is the solution to serve both as showcase and
long box. You can browse the seemingly endless lists of titles, and then buy
new books with a twist. It's wonderfully easy! Depending on the state of your
portfolio, it can be even a little too easy. The Comixology Unlimited feature
gives you access to everything you can read for $ 5.99 a month if you're
interested in a taster's comics menu.
Evernote
Evernote is your list manager,
note manager, voice recorder, manager of making, web page cutter, and
all-in-one digital multi-tool. It is overwhelming at first, but you will
quickly find a number of ways to put it to good use. My favorite feature is
Optical Character Recognition (OCR), which makes the text of the photos searchable.
The next time you get a business card, simply take a photo, and all critical
information will be captured and can be searched between all your devices and
computers, as well as accessible on the Web.
Facebook Messenger
The problem with most messaging
platforms is that they require you to enroll your friends to join as well. Not
so with Facebook Messenger, because the majority of the living population (and
even the recently deceased) already has a Facebook account. Facebook Messenger
is loaded with bells and whistles, especially a huge library of stickers, video
and voice calls, and the ability to send SMS messages. This app is also
surprisingly aware of privacy. You do not need an account to use the
application, entering a phone number is optional and you can send secret
messages using end-to-end encryption so that neither the FBI nor Facebook can
read them.
Google Drive
Google Drive is not just a cloud
storage service. In addition to syncing and storing your files, Google Drive
includes a powerful mobile office suite so you can create and edit files from
your phone. Drive can even store your files locally, to view and edit offline.
It may not replace your desktop office utilities, but it comes surprisingly
close by. LastPass
LastPass
Humans are bad at passwords, and
we are bad at remembering things. Fortunately, there are password managers like
LastPass. With a password manager, the application generates unique and complex
passwords for each site or application that requires it. When you need to log
in, LastPass fills in the correct information, even fills it in other
applications. LastPass also securely stores your personal information so it can
quickly fill out tedious forms and includes mechanisms for securely sharing
passwords with other people, even after you have come out of this deadly realm.
A new pricing structure allows you to create an account and synchronize
passwords between all your devices, mobile or otherwise, for free.
Netflix
When it comes to streaming mobile
video, Netflix is hard to beat. It has a huge (though unstable) library of TV
shows and movies, putting a world of entertainment on hand. Netflix is also
leading the way among streaming services by producing a critically acclaimed
original programming such as Luke Cage, Narcos, The OA and Stranger Things, to
name just a few. It even offers a decent selection of anime titles in
streaming. It is an application that is no longer just about killing time. It
is also about keeping up with the conversation about the latest successful
programs. The fact that it now allows you to download (some) sample for offline
viewing is a huge recent breakthrough for the service.
NordVPN
Google and mobile antivirus
companies have done a great job of keeping Android (mostly) free of dangerous
malware. But when you connect to a public Wi-Fi network, it is possible that
nefarious individuals can intercept all of your information. That's why virtual
private networks are so important, and NordVPN is among the best. Other fun
tricks you can do with a VPN? Hide your advertisers IP address and access
content blocked by the region.
PicsArt Photo Studio
When you think about editing
mobile images, you probably think of a Facebook property, modeled after old
time cameras. I'm talking about Instagram, in case you do not know. But where
Instagram finishes, PicsArt Photo Studio starts, bringing not only filters, but
many more powerful tools. And if you're already a fan of Insta, you can share
your PicsArt creations there to the envy of all your followers.
Pocket Casts
Podcast fans, rejoice. His
frustrations have been heard and his prayers have been answered. I bring you
good news for Google Play, an excellent podcast application has been created:
Pocket Casts. With this app, you can manage all your favorite podcasts and even
sync them between devices. And it was good.
Spotify
There are many ways to listen to
the melodies on your phone, either from Google Play Music or Slacker radio with
human curators. Spotify, however, offers a winning combination of clear and
crisp audio and a massive catalog covering all genres you can imagine and
several of which you've never heard of. Collaborative playlists allow you and
your friends to enjoy custom mixes, and riders will love the training settings
of integrated rhythm combinations. If you just run a music streaming service on
your Android, Spotify is the one you should choose.
